【A cross-border exploration of contemporary calligraphy: the poetic presentation of Shi Chunmao’s calligraphy in Paris 】
《pen and ink without borders — Shi Chunmao Contemporary Calligraphy France Exhibition 》 will be exhibited grandly at Galerie Librairie Impressions in Paris in winter 2024. This exhibition is not only the solo exhibition of artist Shi Chunmao, but also symbolizes another important milestone in cultural exchanges between Taiwan and France. With its unique cross-border integration of abstract aesthetics and calligraphy, Shi Chunmao shows the profound heritage and modernity of Eastern art, giving French people the opportunity to experience the beauty of Chinese culture through calligraphy, an art form with great Eastern cultural characteristics. Shi Chunmao was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He is one of the important promoters of Taiwan’s calligraphy industry. His calligraphy art is inclusive from seal script, official script, regular script, line and grass. Coupled with his early experience in studying Western painting, his works are full of Chinese and Western elements. The atmosphere of combining. In his calligraphy work, he combined pen and ink lines with modern abstract art to give calligraphy more space for imagery and expression, going beyond the traditional framework of calligraphy as a text.
The three main axis series of works exhibited in Paris: “Disappearance”, “Noisy Flowers” and “Cangjie Muse” delve into the abstraction and symbolization of calligraphy. ” “Disconnecting from the phase and not the phase” emphasizes the liberation of calligraphy, releasing calligraphy from the concrete constraints of words, showing the movement and rhythm of pen and ink; “The Sound of Flowers” combines calligraphy with visual art techniques to transform abstract word meanings into concrete images, coupled with rich color expressions, make calligraphy a carrier of personal emotions and stories; “Cangjie Muse” rethought the glyph structure and its meaning of word creation, and explored the creative visual expression of Chinese characters in modern contexts.
Shi Chunmao’s exhibition not only pays tribute to the tradition of calligraphy art, but also seeks innovation and breakthroughs based on tradition. He broke down the barriers between calligraphy and painting, and through the creation of abstract symbols and lines, he achieved the integration of Eastern Zen philosophical aesthetics with Western existential thought. This collision of Eastern and Western philosophy and aesthetics will inspire an impressive cultural dialogue in Paris, the capital of art, allowing French audiences to experience the infinite possibilities and contemporary value of Eastern calligraphy art from the exhibition. This exhibition will also become an important platform for cultural exchanges between Taiwan and France, promote mutual understanding and cooperation between artists from the two countries, and deepen cultural ties between the two countries. The holding of this exhibition will undoubtedly deepen the French people’s understanding of calligraphy and calligraphy, and they hope to open up new opportunities for more transnational cultural cooperation in the future.
